Englishmen have a peculiar sense of humor which is usually not understood by foreigners.

Belarus has its national symbols. They are national anthem, national emblem and the national flag. Belarus is famous for its white storks. People say, they are the symbols of good luck. The white colour is the symbol of peace. So I would say that it’s the best symbol of our country.

There are a lot of youth organizations in the world. They play an important role in the life of teenagers and young people. They help them to make new friends, to work as a team, to find things they are interested in and do some public work.

There are numerous youth organizations in Great Britain: the Boy Scouts, the Girl Guides Association, the Young Men's Christian Association and the Young Women's Christian Association, The Youth Parliament.

In Belarus the most popular and big organizations are the Belarusian Republican Pioneer Organization and the Belarusian Republican Union of Youth. The main aim of the BRSM is to create conditions for all-round development of young people and to contribute to creation of a civil society in Belarus.

Education (studying at school)

1. What can you tell me about your school?

I’ve been studying at Kroshin school for 11 years.

Our school is not very large. As in many other schools there are a number of classrooms, administrative offices, a canteen, a gym and a library. Behind the school there is a stadium.

The most important thing for me is a friendly atmosphere at my school. All the pupils know one another and I have a lot of friends among my classmates.

Our success in learning is impossible without teachers. Our teachers are highly educated people. Their attitude to pupils is always friendly and tolerant.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2. Does your school differ (отличается) from any other school you know?

My school is an ordinary (normal) school and it doesn’t differ much from others. But I should say that we have Pavlyuk Bagrim's museum of folk art and crafts . Visiting the museum is really exciting.

3. Ask me about my school life.

- What were your favourite subjects?

- Did you like your teachers?             - Were you a hard-working pupil?

- Was your school large?                   - Did you get on well with your classmates?

4. What can you advice a student who is not very good at English to do to achieve better results?

Of course, foreign languages are very important in our world.

Learning a foreign language is difficult. First of all you should work hard at your school lessons and do your homework regularly. To achieve good results you need everyday practice in reading, speaking and listening.

5. Today some young people think that having a good education is not important. Do you agree with them?

I think that having a good education means having an interesting and well-paid job in the future. If you study well at school, you can enter a university or college and become a good specialist. But some pupils have no wish to study hard and want to go into practical jobs. Maybe they are right, because good workers are also needed.

Nowadays people can travel in different ways. They can travel by planes, trains, cars or ships.

Of course, travelling by plane is the most convenient. Naturally it is the most expensive way of travelling. Travelling by train is slower, but it has its advantages as well.

But I like travelling by cars. When you travel by car, you can go as slowly or as fast as you wish and stop wherever you want.

5. Nowadays people enjoy travelling a lot. What are the reason do you think?

I think that there are many reasons why people enjoy travelling. They want to see the world, to learn something new and of course to relax.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

5. What difficulties can you have while visiting a foreign country? Is it possible to avoid them?

To my mind, the main difficulty for tourists is to face another culture, another reality. There are differences in manners and habits, food and clothes. I think people who travel abroad and can’t speak the local language feel very uncomfortable. To avoid these difficulties, you should learn foreign languages. Try to get as more information as you can about the country you are going to visit.

Accommodation: living in the city or in the country.

  1. Where do you like to live: in the city or in the country?

I like to live in a city because I think that life in a city is always more exciting and more comfortable than life in a country or in a small town. There is usually something to do or somewhere to go. In the city there is a large access to education, good and interesting jobs, cinemas, galeries, theaters or restaurants, where people can spend their free time.

In the cities, there are a lot of good shops, many sports facilities and so on.

Young people in cities are in better situation, than young people in village or in a small town, because young citizens can go to clubs, discos, and spend their leisure time. They have also more opportunities to meet someone.

  1. Do you mind living on your own? Why or why not?

Yes, I do. I think about living on my own because I want to go to university after school. I think living on my own make me more independent and serious person.

I would recommend him to furnish it in a minimalism style. I think we should have much space in the rooms.

5. They say that the place where you live reflects your character and personality. What do you think about it?

Family relationships

  1. Do you spend much time with your family?

I have many relatives: grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. All of them live in Belarus and we get together from time to time, mainly on our birthdays or other holidays.

  1. Do you get along well with your family? With whom do you get along best?

I’m on a good terms with parents and grandparents. We try to understand and support each other in joys and sorrows. Grandparents share their life experience and give wise advice. My parents seldom lecture me because of school.I should say that I get along with my mother (father, sister, brother) best. We understand each other better

3.What will you ask your British friend about his/her family traditions?

I will ask the following questions:

-          What does a family mean to you?

-          What family traditions do you have in your family?

-          Do you celebrate New Year together?

4.Give me some advice on how to arrange my mother’s birthday.

5.Princess Diana said: “Family is the most important thing in the world.” Do you agree with it?

I agree with it. Family is very important for every person because it gives you a sense of stability and traditions, a feeling of having support and understanding.

Future career

  1. What do you need to become a true professional?

No matter what field you work in, you probably have some ambition of professional success. Success may be defined in different ways by different people, but being an informed and dedicated employee, a strong leader, and an honest person can all make a big difference in making you a successful professional in any career.

I think to become a true professional you should be hard-working person. You should study something new all the time, develop your skills, communicate with people, and be very active. And of course you should be interested in your profession.

  1. Is work essential (необходима) to have a happy life? Why or why not?

-            Yes, there is. Work is necessary to have a happy and balanced life. It gets you money to live and enjoy everything in life. People work to get things they need to live. If you are clever and positive, everything will be ok in the end.

  1. Some people think that it is necessary to have computer skills to get a good job. Do you agree with this?

I agree with this idea. Nowadays computers have become a part of our lives. They are everywhere. They make our lives and our work easier. So, to get a good job you should have computer skills. The Internet can offer you a great variety of possibilities connected with advancing your computer knowledge. It’ll be easy for you to make progress in the computer world.

Belarus (Belarusian national cuisine)

  1. What can you tell me about eating habits in Belarus?

People usually eat three times a day in Belarus.

The first meal of the day in the morning is breakfast. Some Belarusian people eat toast with butter and jam or marmalade and nothing else. Others eat a bowl of cereals with milk or porridge. Belarusian breakfast may also contain sausages, bacon, scrambled or fried egg, beans, etc. Melon, grapefruit or fruit cocktails are popular, but the most common drinks at this time of the day are a cup of tea or coffee.

The second meal of the day in Belarus is lunch. It is the biggest meal during the day and usually it includes several dishes. We usually eat a bowl of soup with some slices of bread, some salad, meat or fish with potatoes, rice and so on, and a cup of tea.

Dinner is the last meal Belarusian people have. It’s a cooked meal of meat or fish and some vegetables.

But there many people who keep fit and don’t eat much for supper. They eat fruit, vegetables, drink juice.

- How many lakes in Belarus?

4. Which national dishes can you recommend a tourist to taste in Belarus?

I would recommend a very simple dish – draniki. It is cooked from grated potato, flour, eggs and onion. Draniki stuffed (фаршированные) with meat or mushrooms called koldyny.

I disagree with this idea. There are some facts.

Firstly, there are many young people who speak Belarusian because they like it and respect their roots.

Secondly, many elderly people speak Belarusian, because it's the language of their youth. There are many books in Belarusian. There are also many interesting programmes on TV in Belarusian.

The second aspect of the Belarusian character is that a Belarusian holds tight to what he/she has gained. (держитсязато, чтоприобрел)

Belarusian people have always enjoyed receiving guests.

Belarusians are kind, soft, soulful |ˈsəʊlfʊl|душевный, and hospitable, hardworking and tolerant, reserved; they are rather pessimistic and peaceful.

Most of the rivers flow into the North Sea. The Thames is the deepest and the longest of the British rivers.

5. Do the British differ greatly from Belarusian people in character?

I have never been to England, but I think that British people differ from Belarusian people. As it known the British are more reserved [rɪ'zɜːvd] (сдержанные)and don’t talk much about themselves. Belarusians are more open-minded and friendly.

Science and modern technologies

  1. What is the role of science in our fast-moving world?

Science has offered many gifts to people. We can’t live without electricity. Everything in our life depends on it. I can’t imagine my life without modern gadgets and devices. I have a lot of them at home. I can do nothing without the Internet and my mobile phone. Mobile phones provide users an access to the Internet, sending and receiving e-mails and text messages, watching TV, listening to music, taking photos and phoning.

My mum uses a lot of modern devices for cooking. They save her spare time and make her life easier.

So I can say that the role of science in our fast-moving world is very important.

5 People are becoming more dependent on high-tech devices. Is it good or bad?

I think high-tech devices are useful, they make people’s lives easier. But people should be careful and not to overuse devices. They should remember that there are things they can do themselves.

Your future career

  1. What would you like to become?

Nowadays good education means a good job. I am leaving school soon and I’m thinking about possible careers and jobs. It’s very difficult to choose your future career because there are many alternatives and you don’t know where to start. It’s a very difficult decision to choose the right job. Of course, I want a profitable job, but I also want to enjoy the profession in which I’ll be engaged.

Choosing a career is very important choice that influences all our life. You should realistically evaluate (реальнооценивать) your talent, personal interests and abilities, strengths and weaknesses.

In my opinion the choice should depend on (зависеть) what you are interested in (on your interests).

I want to enjoy my work and I want to have a well-paid job.

I’d like to become a __________________ .

I think this job suits me because I’m good at (math, chemistry, physics, languages, history, painting, singing …).

I like _______________________________________________________________________

-            No, there isn’t. I’m sure that any job or profession has both positive and negative sides. Any job is interesting and exciting in its own way.

  1. Some people think that it is necessary to speak a foreign language well to get a good job. Do you agree with them?

Yes, I agree with them. I think in the modern world the knowledge of a foreign language can give you better career. English is a world language and it doubles (удваивает) your chances in life.

Your family

  1. What role does it play in your life?

I believe that everything has its beginning in the family. My family consists of mum, dad, and sister / brother. My mum’s name is … She is a … (doctor). My dad’s name is … He is a … (driver).

Family is very important for every person. It gives you support and stability. It gives you a sense of tradition and a feeling of having understanding.

Family members always help each other in difficult situations. It’s important to have someone you can rely on and share all your problems with.

  1. Are you on good terms with your parents and grandparents?

I advise you to respect each other, to take part in family activities, such as birthdays or visiting elderly relatives.

I think that people who have got a close-knit family are really lucky. But it’s not easy to make your family relations warm and pleasant. Of course, children should respect their parents. You should care for your family members.

  1. Nowadays an average family has one child. From your point of view, how many children should be in a family?

In my opinion family should have more than one child.

It is sad that families are getting so small today. Some scientists consider this fact a national disaster, and I agree. A perfect family is one with 3 and even more children.

Accommodation

  1. What does you house / flat look like?

I live in a nice flat (house). It has all modern conveniences: central heating (обогрев)/ furnace [ˈfərnəs] - печь, gas, electricity, cold and hot running water.

There is a living room, two bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a toilet in our flat (house).

The living-room is the largest room in the flat (house). My family likes to watch TV there, it’s our favourite room.

My bedroom is not large and there isn’t much furniture in it: my bed, a writing table, some shelves and a computer.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2. Do you like cleaning the house / flat? Why or why not?

5 They say that living in the city is better than living in the country. What do you think about it?

I think nowadays most people prefer living in a city area and few enjoy living in the country. Cities offer more educational and working opportunities, a lot of places of entertainment.

I think that living in the country better than living in a city . There is a lot of clean and fresh air. I can grow your vegetables, fruits, berries. To do farming and get meat, eggs, milk. And i will be sure of their quality.

You can freely walk around the surroundings. Here everyone knows each other, so it’s impossible to get lost.

1. What can you tell me about the system of education in Belarus?

In general the system of education in Belarus includes primary, secondary schools and higher education.

Now they can enter a college, a vocational school or continue their education at school for two more years. 5. Today some young people want to study abroad because they believe that the level of education is higher there. Would you do the same?

I don’t believe that the level of education is better abroad. Because today there is a lot of foreign students study in Belarusian universities.

Of course having a diploma of a foreign university is very prestigious and it gives you an opportunity to make a career abroad.

Environment

1. People say that our planet is in danger. Do you share this opinion?

Yes, I share this opinion. Industrialization brought (привело) human society into conflict with the environment. Every year the world’s industry pollutes (загрязнять) the planet. There are different types of pollution (загрязнение): air pollution, water pollution, even noise pollution.

Among the most great environmental problems are the resource depletion (истощениересурсов), ozone depletion (истощениеозоновогослоя), acid rains (кислотныйдождь), greenhouse effect (парниковыйэффект), global warning (глобальноепотепление) and deforestation (вырубкалесов).

- How waste materials are recycled?

4. What do you think people should do to protect the environment? Give advice.

I think people should stop deforestation and hunting rare animals. We should try to save water and electricity. People should start recycling waste materials. The industry should stop polluting water.

5. Ecological problems have no boarders. Can you explain this statement?

To my mind this statement shows, that all ecological problems are interdependent (взаимозависимы). There are many examples. For example, the nuclear accident at Chernobyl affected not only the Ukraine, but many other countries.

QUALITY OF COMMUNICATION

The Internet nowadays is like a huge city full of many different kinds of places and people. As in a real city, there are certain places which are suitable for youngsters and others which need to be avoided.

The Internet neither belongs to nor is controlled by any one person, organisation or government. It gives all of us the opportunity to create materials for others to see. On the other hand, as in ordinary life, there are those who might use it for illegal purposes. The freedom of the Net offers exciting opportunities for youngsters and, by being aware of the possible dangers and taking steps to avoid them, they can happily explore that online world in safety.

The Internet has enabled and advanced new forms of human interactions through instant messaging, Internet forums, and social networking. Common sense will certainly help children to use the Internet safely. It is preferable, for example, for parents to get to know who their children are meeting online and make sure they never give out personal information about themselves. Although it is an excellent tool for learning, playing and communicating with others, youngsters should not be allowed to become so involved that they forget other activities important to their development. How often do we hear of youngsters spending all their free time in front of the computer, isolating themselves from other people their age? Computers are admirable tools that improve the quality of life, but when used sensibly. Steve Jobs said: “Technology is nothing. What’s important is that you have a faith in people, that they’re basically good and smart, and if you give them tools, they’ll do wonderful things with them”. Obviously, surfing as a family activity is the best solution, so that any problems that are found can be discussed together.

Parents need to think about safety issues and agree on a set of rules. Just as youngsters are given instructions on road safety, they also need to be instructed on how to travel safely along that superhighway.

Answer the questions:

1. What this text is about?

  1. The author says that the Internet offers exciting opportunities for youngsters. Find this extract and read it aloud.
  2. What is surfing the Internet compared to?
  3. Why is it important to use the Internet sensibly?

     2.    How has the life style of the second speaker changed?

I.1.Read the article and say in 2—3 sentences what it is about.

Mi Luna

Mi Luna is a restaurant in the Rice Village. The atmosphere is lively, and the food is delicious. It is a Spanish cuisine restaurant that you will soon consider one of your favourite restaurants.

There are many reasons why this restaurant is special. One is that they make a wonderful dish called Pulpo con Patatas. It’s a delicious Spanish seafood dish which has the following ingredients: octopus, potatoes, salt, olive oil, and chilepiquin. (Chilepiquin is a special kind of chili that looks like red powder and is very hot.)

Another reason is the place itself. Once you are in the restaurant, you feel a Spanish atmosphere; it is painted with the classical colours that are used in Spain — red, yellow, white, and black. The way this place is decorated is really very impressive. On the walls, there are photos of Spanish bullfighters, taken at the perfect moments of their performances.

On one of the walls, you can enjoy a photo of the famous classical Spanish dance called Flamenco1. In it, the dancers are wearing the traditional clothes, and the lady has in her hands the most famous Spanish musical instrument called castanets2.

The service is pleasant, caring and quick. It makes you want to come back. The waiters just keep looking at your table to find out if you need something. If they see an empty glass, they immediately ask you if you want something else to drink. At all time, they are friendly and ready to clear all the used dishes from your table. They are always smiling because they are trying to make you feel comfortable and happy. They know each dish, so they are able to explain it to you.

On their menu, they serve a large variety of foods, and there is a section on the menu that I like most. In Spain, these dishes are called tapas3Tapas or appetizers are dishes that have a small amount of food. In this way you will be able to try a lot of different Spanish dishes.

By the time you leave Mi Luna, you are sure to be entirely satisfied and have very good memories of the visit. It is a great place for any occasion, but it is very busy, so don’t forget to book a table first.

1 Flamenco  [fləˈmeŋkəʊфламенко (испанский танец)

2 castanets [ˌkæstəˈnets] кастаньеты (традиционный испанский ударный музыкальный инструмент)

If you belong to the older generation, Elderhostel is a good place to live.

Elderhostel, founded in 1975, is the world’s largest educational and travel organisation for older adults. Its aim is to excite people’s minds and enrich people’s lives promoting and encouraging different activities among the older generation. There are no examinations or marks. First of all, there are traditional programmes. Here, people study ancient history, literature, and art, and can learn about different cultures, modern people and issues.

Also, Elderhostel believes that physical activity helps people to keep a positive selfimage and contributes to the sense of wellbeing both mental and physical. Many programmes have keepfit equipment and a large number of social and cultural events take place there, as well as sporting activities. Regular physical activity can prevent many common illnesses, such as high blood pressure and asthma and it helps people who already have such illnesses. Alongside the usual sports like swimming, hockey and cricket, bowling and tennis, you will find “Dog Clubs” and “Flying Clubs”. Then there is a group of adventure programmes involving activities like hiking, kayaking2, biking and studying whales.

There are also programmes which give people the chance to help communities in different ways, such as protecting endangered species, tutoring school children and building affordable housing.

Finally, there are programmes which take place aboard a boat, anywhere from Antarctic to the Mississippi River.

The word ‘old’ has a very different and very positive meaning in Elderhostel!

  1. Ask me about my school life.

1. Let’s talk about education.
